« Ce qui nous intéresse avant tout est la vie et les actions des matériaux. La manière dont les déplacements, l’usure, l’écaillement de l’encre, l’écrasement et la perte d’éclat créent des performances en mouvement dans l’espace. Nous avons déjà fait des performances avec des danseurs à partir de ces gestes et des mouvements de notre propre corps lorsque nous manipulons des objets dans un lieu d’exposition. Nous étudions le corps en tant que matériau et l’objet, la matière, en tant que corps qui donne une performance. Les deux sont des êtres présents dans un espace et comportent des qualités physiques tout en étant dotés d’une volonté. En créant des chorégraphies avec les tâches liées à des objets, nous faisons évoluer notre réflexion sur la matérialité, l’entropie, la collaboration et le travail.

À Moncton, nous allons ériger une immense structure de papier extérieure. Nous lui ferons ensuite subir des tensions mécaniques, et finalement nous la laisserons à la merci des intempéries. Il sera possible d’assister au processus complet, car l’espace de création, un échafaudage, sera ouvert au public affin de lui permettre d’être témoin des facteurs (humains et non humains) qui seront à l’œuvre dans la transformation matérielle de la structure. »

 “We are interested in the life and actions of materials. How shifting, scuffing, peeling, crushing and fading creates performative gestures within space. We have done performance work with dancers that builds on these gestures as well as the movements of our own bodies when deploying objects within the exhibition space. We are interested in the body as a material object, and in material objects as performing bodies. Both are beings in space with physical qualities and will. By building choreographies of object-related tasks, we are furthering our exploration of materiality, entropy, collaboration and labour.  

In Moncton, we will erect a massive paper structure outdoors that we will then put under mechanical stress and finally subject it to the effects of the weather. The entire process will be on display, as the stage of action, a scaffolding structure, will be open to allow the viewing of the human and non-human actions involved in the material transformation of the work.”

Chloe Lum et Yannick Desranleau sont basés à Montréal. Ils ont exposé au Canada et à l'étranger, le plus récemment à l'Université du Texas (Austin, 2015), au Center for Books and Paper Arts (Columbia College de Chicago, 2015), au Centre des arts de la Confédération (Charlottetown, 2014), YYZ artists’ outlet (Toronto, 2013), Blackwood Gallery (University of Toronto, 2012), Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (Québec Triennial 2011), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna, Austria, 2010), BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead, England, 2009) et au Whitechapel Project Space (London, England, 2007). Leurs oeuvres collaboratives se trouvent dans plusieurs collections, notamment au Victoria and Albert Museum (Londres), à la University of Maryland Art Gallery et au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. 

Lum et Desranleau, également actifs en tant que musiciens, ont participé aux tournées internationales du groupe de rock expérimental AIDS Wolf et ont produit une série d'affiches de concerts primées, signées du surnom Seripop.

Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau are based in Montréal. They have exhibited in Canada and abroad, notably at the University of Texas at Austin (2015), the Center for Books and Paper Arts (Columbia College Chicago, 2015), Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown, 2014), YYZ artists’ outlet (Toronto, 2013), the Blackwood Gallery (University of Toronto, 2012), Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal (Québec Triennial 2011), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna, Austria, 2010), BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead, England, 2009), and Whitechapel Project Space (London, England, 2007). Their collaborative work is in several collections, notably the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the University of Maryland Art Gallery, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. 

Lum and Desranleau have been also active as musicians, touring internationally with the experimental rock band AIDS Wolf, and producing a series of award-winning concert posters under the monicker Seripop.
