L'nuwelti'k en direct!/ L'nuwelti'k in action!

Ursula à l'oeuvre.
Ursula hard at work.

First Nations artist Ursula A. Johnson presented her piece L'nuwelti'k (We Are Indian) at the Law Faculty Library on the Université de Moncton campus as part of the jè-st' festival. Art fans also got a chance to see her artistic process at the opening of our own exhibit, Aboriginal Voices: Four Artists from Atlantic Canada, here at the Galerie d'art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen.

Here we see her creating one of the busts in the Law Faculty.
Ursula uses a basket weaving technique to weave wood fibers around volunteers who self identify as First Nations people to cast a critical look at the Indian Act. By demonstrating that all the busts look similar despite the different "classifications" of the volunteers, she questions the legitimacy of the different definitions of Aboriginal individuals as dictated by the Indian Act and those who created it.

It was important for Ursula to present her piece outside the Law Faculty because she wants to create awareness  of the Indian Act and it's effect on the First Nations population to Canada's future lawers.

Jè-st' is back again with a new direction, or rather a redirection. The artists will toy with the primary function of common and familiar items in the context of this year's theme; "détournement", meaning redirection.

Redirect yourself to broaden your horizons from September 25th to the 28th. There are also some parallel activities to be enjoyed throughout the month.

The BGL collective is composed of three artists from Quebec City that will be presenting a piece entitled "La manège" (The Ride). BGL is a collective that uses simple and familiar images to give a provocative look at our society. In their words "...to bring people to look differently at the world they live in, we believe it is necessary to start from the tangible elements of daily life. However, the goal of our installations is not to reproduce objects as such, but to create a gap that provokes reflection and raises awareness.”
